Name: René Avicenna
Gender: Male
Age: 16 years
Height: 5’ 6”
Race: Human (Caucasian); New Roman (of English descent)
Skills: Trained in numerous disciplines of the arts and sciences, specializing in medicine, literature and astronomy. He is very artistic, and meticulous in his attention to detail and organization.
Abilities: Eidetic (photographic) memory, and the ability to recall anything he has said seen, heard, spoken, written or done, as an Archive never forgets. He is also a gifted psychometric, able to uncover images and experiences from either an object or person's past through touch and manipulation.
Items/Possessions: A small sack used to hold tools and supplies, often suspended from his belt. His most prized possession, however, is the ornately-bound and locked Book of Archives that he carries everywhere. Before the Great Diaspora, every Archive was given one such volume and instructed on its usage. Though every Archive will guard his/her text with their life, others might find it peculiar that the books contain nothing but blank pages. Only its owner (and those they choose) can view and decipher its language.
Appearance: will be posted shortly; general idea is as follows
(**Original image does not belong to me; is of "Soren/Senario" from Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, copyright Intelligent Systems and Nintendo. It is used here because I can honestly find no better image to illustrate the concept.)
Background: As national borders disappeared in the years following the End, widespread anarchy at last descended upon the Earth. The fragile associations of small towns and villages vanished in the face of militant bands of nomads that roamed the continents in search of food and shelter, and even the most basic modern social constructs began to fall away. However, some of the few remaining urban centers in what was Western Europe survived, dividing themselves into various “tribes” that sought to preserve at least some parts of the life and world that had ended so many years before.
In civilization’s last days, several of these loosely-confederated tribes united in a desperate attempt to hold out against the mixed bands of marauders that assaulted from all sides. Migrating southward en-masse to escape a worsening climate, these tribes fortified themselves in the remnants of New Rome, where they made a final effort to survive. Their success (if it could be called that) was marginal. As the confederation tore itself apart, the tribes placed their last hopes on a mysterious, secretive society of scribes and academics who had for generations busied themselves with recording and preserving the human legacy. Its first and final task: to flee New Rome and disperse itself across the face of a dying planet, carrying with it the cataloged knowledge of man with the hope that the human race might not disappear entirely. Twenty pairs from the society’s youngest, purest members - The Archives - were chosen, and began their exodus from New Rome just as it fell for the last time.
Though most of The Archives escaped the immediate danger of New Rome’s destruction, they soon found themselves to be a dying breed at the hands of the very species they were sent to preserve. Several were killed outright by small bands of hunters, while other pairs met their end by the elements, were “resourced” by nomads they contacted or simply starved to death on their journey. Their exact number now is uncertain, their voices silent and their peculiar volumes of text lost. One Archive – perhaps the last remaining – wanders aimlessly through a land bearing no name. What follows is his story.
